Return to Play Protocol

Return to Play Criteria for the Injured Athlete

 

An Athlete’s return to play status will be determined by:

  • Amount of swelling to extremity      
  • Pain tolerance
  • Range of Motion / Strength as determined by return to play agility drills

 

The Athlete MUST be able to perform the following functions at game speed, without significant limping or pain, in order to return to play

  • Run
  • Jump
  • Cut
  • Perform Sport Specific Drills

 Physician's Release

  • The athlete must be either cleared by a physician or the certified athletic trainer prior to full activity!
  • If the athlete was pulled by a physician, other than the team physician, then that physician must provide written release to be placed in the athlete’s medical file

 

The Coach

  • Once an athlete has been released, it is at the coach’s discretion when and how much they will play

 

Rehabilitation

  • Rehabilitation will be performed in the Atheltic Training Room at some point during the end of the school day during practice.  It may be done prior to, during or after practice depending on the nature of the injury and progress the athelte is making.
  • If an athlete fails to show for rehabilitation, and they have not notified the coach and athletic trainer, it will be looked upon as an unexcused practice, subject to the discipline set forth in their team rules.

 

Return to Play Criteria for the Ill Athlete

An Athlete will be allowed to return to play under the following conditions following an illness:

  • They are Asymptomatic
  • They have Clear skin
  • They have been Cleared by a physician if they first went to a physician with their illness

 

Written Documentation MUST accompany any athlete if the Family Physician or Other Physician PULLED them from activity.  The athlete WILL NOT be allowed to practice or compete WITHOUT a written physician’s release.
